Sister Maria de la Milagrosa was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, May 24, 1942. She entered the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament in Guadalajara, Mexico at the age of 15 and came to Alaska on May 15, 1985 at the age of 42.
Sister Milagrosa came from a family of three girls. She was very close to her father.
At the age of 12, she went to visit her two sisters, 14 and 15, who were postulants at the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament in Guadalajara. They asked her if she wanted to enter the convent. She said no, I don’t want to.
She did not visit her sisters again until a year later, when she was 13. Her heart was deeply moved by the happiness of her sisters and by the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Sister Milagrosa told the Mother Superior that she wanted to enter the Monastery. The Mother told her to pray and think. She said maybe you want to come because of your sisters but it won’t be the same as it was at home. It’s good in all things but not the same.
Sister Milagrosa went home and told her father and mother of her desire to enter the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament. Her father cried and said no, I already gave two daughters to the Lord, you are for me. Her mother said okay, whatever you like, I’ll help you. Her mother worked on the father with this.
When it was almost time for her 15th birthday, her father said to her, “What do you want for your birthday?” She replied, “To enter the Monastery.” He cried and cried but said yes.
Sister Milagrosa has never regretted her decision to come to Alaska. She says it’s very pretty here and loves the abundance of nature, it helps her to think about God. It’s an honor to stay here and keep the Blessed Sacrament for all the people.
